Whole Puppy Wellness

At Heart of Texas German Shepherds, the wellness of our puppies is our utmost concern and top priority. Caring for our dogs at our home base in Grapeland, just a short distance from Austin, is an important part of their first weeks of life. At our facility, feeding schedule and hygiene is established soon after birth of the puppies. Constant and consistent handling and cleaning is also critical, whether by trained breeders or the new mom.
Once reaching four or five weeks of age, our puppies begin developing new, shiny, strong and sharp teeth. This signals the mother that weaning is necessary, and allows us breeders to step in and mimic their mom in terms of feeding and cleaning the pups. We also introduce transitional formula which satisfies all their nutritional needs, and keep them on a solid feeding schedule. A puppy’s digestion system is delicate – similar to a human infant – but at a more accelerated pace. Within a week of weaning, moistened kibble is gradually introduced as well as healthy treats of raw chicken and bone. All of our puppies receive a three-day regimen of liquid wormer at two, four and six weeks, to insure healthy digestive tracts and happy puppies!
While the pups are in our care, health checks are performed at our local vet. During the examination, the puppy’s eyes, ears, teeth, heart and lungs are checked, and a stool sample is examined for signs of internal parasites. In addition, the first in a series of DHPP immunizations is administered, taking over where antibodies from mom have left off.
The chores as a professional breeder are endless, but the rewards are well worth it. Our continual presence in the life of the puppies gives them exposure to sights, sounds and smells of typical home life. Our gentle and constant handling allows them to experience praises, behavioral corrections and touch, all of which is beneficial and essential for their development and stability of mind. The puppies at Heart of Texas are top priority among all of us h and it is our mission for our pups to receive clean bills of health and wellness and eventually new homes.
